UTEP Softball to Ignite Valentine’s Day Sparks with Doubleheader Against UNM

EL PASO – Love is in the air, and so is the excitement of collegiate softball as the UTEP softball team gears up to host the New Mexico Lobos for a doubleheader on Valentines Day at Helen of Troy Field at 2 and 4 pm MT.

 LEADING OFF  

  • UTEP leads Conference USA in home runs per game (1.20), slugging percentage (0.518), and walks (23). The Miners' walk count ranks 14th in the NCAA. 
  • UTEP batted .273 through five games during opening weekend paced by four players who are batting at or above the mark, three of which have 10-plus plate appearances (Morales, Richard, and Hogan). Kenna Collett leads the way with a slash line of .571/.727/1.429 on four hits with two homeruns (one solo, one grand slam), and seven RBI. 
  • Five players posted at least one homerun. UTEP shredded six home runs through its first five games with Collett accounting for two. 
  • Five arms combined in the circle at the Dr. Diana Natalicio Memorial Tournament with two aces tabbing a win. Taja Felder holds a perfect 3-0 record that includes a complete game shutout win over Abilene Christian. Zaylie Calderon made three circle appearances and earned two saves. 
  • All 25 players on the UTEP roster saw action during opening weekend.

 THE OPPONENT   
New Mexico  

  • UNM is 1-4 to start the season 
  • The Lobos revamped their roster with 12 freshmen and 15 newcomers. Of the freshmen, UNM added four pitchers, three outfielders, three utility players and two infielders. UNM also added three transfers in junior catcher/ infielder Sydney Carithers, junior pitcher Emily Brouse and sophomore outfielder Taylor Morgan. 
  • The Lobos are on a four-game losing streak, with their lone win coming from their season opener against Tennessee State, 7-6. UNM is currently 8th in the Mountain West standings. 
  • UNM is 35th in the nation in total stolen bases (9) 
  • Chloe Yeatts leads the team with five RBI and 11 total bases off five hits that included two home runs and holds a .357 batting average. 
  • UNM has utilized four pitchers with Amber Linton making five circle appearances, throwing 13.1 innings and McKenna Guest following with 8.0 innings pitched for a 1-2 record. 
  • UNM leads the all-time series, 18-13.
